Hamilton Princess GF

Being married to a Bermudian and having family there we try to visit Bermuda a few times a year and use the opportunity to enjoy a bit of a break. In fact, anytime we visit either of our families, hotels are de rigueur since it allows us a bit of us time and a pseudo-vacation.

In 20+ years, we have always stayed at the Hamilton Princess and Beach Club (managed by Fairmont) which has evolved into a fresh and vibrant addition to the Bermuda hotel scene since new owners took over a few years ago. They have been busy renovating and refreshing the hotel which was much needed to elevate this grande dame to a modern-inspired version reminiscent of her former storied glory. Works of art from the impressive personal collection of the owners is on display throughout the hotel ranging from Warhols to Banksy to Hirst.

The rooms have been completely renovated with the addition of a large number of one bedroom suites in the Poinciana Wing. We stayed in one just after the renovation and the suite was lovely with a large terrace overlooking the marina or gardens.

There are several on-site dining options and all have gluten-free options. We prefer to stay in the Fairmont Gold Wing which provides a private check-in and lounge overlooking the water. There are several food presentations throughout the day including a lovely breakfast where gluten-free bread is always available and even sweet gluten-free treats at tea time (the staff have often surprised me with custom gluten-free treats amde by the chef).

On my most recent visit I put the Crown & Anchor through its paces and sampled several new gluten-free menu items (all clearly marked — but the staff are always happy to accomodate special needs).

The mixed greens, roast beetroot and avocado salad was quite refreshing with grapefuit adding a hint of sourness that perfectly complimented the earthiness of the beets. The chia seeds dressing was mild but full of flavor that paired perfectly with the ingredients.

The classic corned beef Reuben (while not gluten-free on the menu) can be made with gluten-free bread and is perfect when looking for a more substainal lunch option.

Perhaps my favorite item was the Shepherd’s Pie which is a gluten-free option. It’s a good size and filled with a beef and lamb mince then topped with fresh mashed potatoes. It comes with a lovely side salad and is definitely one of my new favorite menu item.

You can view their current summer menu here which features some new items that I know I am looking forward to trying. Gluten-free bangers and mash with gravy — yes please!
